slew, agreed 100%.

remittances are a HUGE part of the economy, but it doesn't make up for brain drain.

you also have to look at the balance between having money sent to women and children, and having a father in the home with the family. a lot of social problems can arise, especially in the cities where families tend to be more disjointed from the extended family support network.

when you send women overseas to earn cash, they face a real risk of becoming another one of millions trapped in the human trafficking trade, centred in south east asia anyway.

good and bad, long term, tends toward the bad. developing their own country will help build an economy that can support working people without having to force people into diaspora.

Several organizations do this such as Rotary Club's Group Exchange Program. The club sends qualified professionals 25-40 years old to other countries for 4-6 weeks. The members experience the host country's institutions and way of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad and exchange ideas. What the participants learn will hopefully be implemented in the country of origin.

Everyone benefits.

For the respondent that mentioned that the Filipinos that are outside the country work mostly as domestic helpers thus not necessarily a brain drain to the country, please note

1. that simply because one is a domestic worker does not mean that the said person is not intelligent, nor unskilled;

2. that the profession is a decent one. There is nothing wrong working as a domestic help.

In the short term, yes. In the long term, no. Sending the Brightest to work in foreign country would help the Philipines generate cash quickly. The problem is a lot of them won't return and sending the smartest abroad, means they are not in the Philipines to help build the base of the future economy . If all the smart people left the Philipines, who is going to fix the problem back at home?

Let me tell you something. The bulk of the filipinos working in Singapore, Hong Kong and probably in other "rich" countries are actually domestic workers. Yes, some of them have college degrees back in the Phillipines, but this is nothing substantial.

1. So, most Filipinos working abroad are not really the "brains" of the Philipines.
2. These poor people need the job abroad to improve the lives of their families back home hence they leave their villages and going to other countries where invariably they are treated badly, and in some case abused.
3. In a place like HK where there are well over 100,000 philipinos working as domestic helpers the general public in Hong Kong assumes that all Philipinos are only fit to do domestic work and start to stereotype Philipinos even in Cantonese soap operas, where you will see the house "maid" to be a Filipino!
4. The Philipine Government is a heartless one too. It requires these hard working people to reimburse high amounts of tax for working abroad! Much of the tax money ends up in the hands of corrupt officials anyway.

Lastely to answer your question, yes it is advantageous to the people of the Philipines as they have no other alternative but to go abroad to earn a living as things back home are pretty bad and poorly managed. I know that here in the U.S. we have many nurses who have come from the Philipines. They are highly respected for their professionalism.

Hope my answer helps a bit.
Good luck

sending filipinos abroad has its pros and cons
dollar remitances of filipinos abroad boosts our economy
the rate of unemployed filipinos here in our country will go down.
overpopulation of the country will also be affected.

professional leaving the philippines will be in favor of the countries they will work for.
most domestic helpers go outside the philippines taking care of other families while leaving their own family on their own.. the cause... either their children becomes out of school youths..undergraduate.. because althoug they are equipped with money...there is no supervision on the part of the mother.

as a family it really helps but those remittances the government received like 10 billion dollars annually where those money go? mis management is a big problem in your country they should learn and the authority should do good things in return. imagine one family go to work as ofw and millions around the world just to feed his family back home is very frustrating to do to be far apart with your love one. filipinos are hardworking and the government should do something for the betterment of the masses. ofw you don't have to be ashame you do this coz you want to have a decent life of your family back home. cheers!!!!

Yes, due to lack of job opportunities in our country, going out to other countries helps us to have a living. Isn't that an advantage?
-
If all of us are there and just wait what will happen to us.. nothing good will happen.
-
Earning foreign currencies i think it helps the economy. Being good and known with our field of occupation here... we are waving our own's flag.
