Due to competition, you can usually get a basic TiVO receiver for free or at least somewhat cheap if you sign a contract ...if you get a receiver that can record more than 1 program at once more...TiVo is about16.95 a month. If you have directtv or dish, they offer someting very similar for about 6.95 a month over the cost of the other monthly costs.
Basically, it downloads a programming list and allows you to select which programs you want to record. The programs are recorded digitally on a hard drive. This allows you to fast foward/rewind/zoom as well as many other features. you can also use it along with other video inputs to allow picture in picture watching on your tv.
you can also use your computer like a tivo without paying the monthly fee. you will need software that allows it and a video tuner card that allows video input, which you can hook your tv up to or watch your recording on the monitor.

Tivo is basically a computer designed for scheduling and recording TV programs. They cost $50-$200 depending on the hard drive size. These days you can buy one for free or cheap with a 2 year committment. Tivo has gone up in price. A few years ago, it only costs $12.95/month. Now, they have jacked it up to $16.95/month.
Is it worth it? Yes, if you are going to take advantage of all the features and watch alot of TV. If you only watch a few hours per a week, it's probably not worth your wild. If there are alot of programs that you wish you could see, but they always overlap, then Tivo is the perfect solution. It's simple to use.
I had Tivo for about 2 years. Since it doesn't record high definition, I have switched to Comcast DVR service. Only $5/month and it records HD. It doesn't record as many hours as a Tivo and the interface is clunky, but it's cheaper and does high def.
If you want to look for a long term solution, then I suggest purchasing a media center. It's a computer with free recording and scheduling software. They cost between $1000-$2000, but you can record 100+ hours without deleting one program. They have large hard drives. Plus, you can use them as computers, multimedia jukebox and watch DVD's.
