Stannard's basic thesis is that there were 100 million people in the Americas prior to the arrival of Columbus. By 1600, a little over a century later, over 90 percent of them had been killed off by epidemics of smallpox and various other diseases.
For example, the population of Central Mexico circa 1520 was 25 million; by 1620, it was just over one million.

His basic argument is that the introduction of diseases by the Spanish (and English) to the Americas was genocidal.
While the debate over the population in the Americas is still raging within the fields of history, archeology and anthropology, the fact that mass epidemics had a devastating impact on native populations is well established.
