was using xp and had one of my drives set to dynamic. now with vista that drive is showing up but i can't access any data. it says that if i convert this drive from dynamic to basic then i will loose all my data. how can i resolve this problem? this drive happens to be my largest and there is no way i can back this up on another drive.

If you get hold of a USB cable that is a USB- IDE/SATA adapter you will be able to remove the drive from your PC and read the disk as a USB disk. This will allow you to do what you want with the data regards backing it up before you get on with the next task on the disk. The USB cables are not that expensive - just search for USB to SATA, IDE Adapter on google and you will find many companies selling these. Its also great for dealing with damaged disk sometime they wont load windows but the data is still accessible for backup prior to a reformat, Hope this helps, good luck.

try using a different disk manager than the one that comes with windows
