You ask what distinguishes the Muslim "moderates" from the Muslim “extremists.” Political realists see that Muslim “moderates” are more patient than Muslim extremists. The “moderates” merely prefer a phased strategy for Israel’s demise. This makes Mahmoud Abbas a “moderate” and Ismail Haniyeh an “extremist.”

The litmus test of a Muslim moderate is this: Does he or she publicly avow the legitimacy of the Jewish State of Israel? And does he or she publicly reject the Arab “right of return”—which is but a code word for Israel’s destruction? You will not find a politically or strategically significant number of such Muslims.

All the talk about Muslim “moderates” is little more than escapism and obscurantism. Terrorism is coextensive with Islam: in Iraq and Iran, in Syria and Lebanon, in Algeria and the Sudan, in Chechenya and Indonesia.

Meanwhile, in mosques across the United States, imams preach hatred of Christians and Jews; some even call for Jihad.

This question itself is the problem. Is it more difficult to tell if a "Muslim" is an extremist than a if "Jew" or a "Christian" or "Atheist" or "Arab" or "American" or "Israeli" is an extremist? The problem we all face is based in our own prejudice and our own ignorance of each other. This is not a question about Muslims or Jews or Asians or Blacks or Whites but about us, about you and me. Is it more wrong to bomb a home from 20000 feet than from 2 feet. Is it more right to impose your will on someone else because you are a Christian than because you are a Muslim? Until we face and admit our own ignorance and bigotry, we cannot solve any of these problems and indeed, they can only become worse. The example of the Palestinians attacking Israel, the Israelis attacking Lebanon, the Americans attacking Iraq are just symptoms of the problem. The problem is that we are all, all of us, extremists. And we had better find a way back together soon, or only catastrophe awaits us all and at the hands of each other.

Muslim moderates won't show their hatred on other faiths in general and will not use words like "Qafir, Jihad and death to qafir"..One important point to note is, in India I have noticed most of the Muslims say "Islam first and Indian (nationality) next"! But All other Indians except Muslims feel "We are proud to be Indians irrespective of our religion!"

Extremists are total terrorists having their work & food in India and live in Pakistan (mentally). They propagate Islam first and take weapons while preaching, what they call as "love and equal rights to the followers of other religions'!!!

The Muslim children are mentally slow poisoned from early days itself in their Madarasas where they learn Arabic + Holy quoran. The preachers & teachers are the reason behind all these hatred.......

ı am a Turk and a muslım and ı believe in god with all my heart , sometimes ı practice my religion and ı can enjoy what the life has given me too. I go out clubbing , drinking , having fun. But ofcourse that doesnt mean that ı worship when ı am drunk. For me ı think the best thing is to balance your beliefs.

For the extremists ; I can say that actually they are ill minded and although Ä°slam is the religion of peace they are making other people think that Ä°slam only consists of jihad and bombing and etc.

Well, i would personally say that the main distinction would be their views of other faiths and the degree with which they will accept diverse opinions and interpretations of Islam.
Extremism is extremism, regardless of the particular faith one follows. The extremist will disregard any other ideologies and strive to convert and subdue all others. The extremist is also mentally rigid and unwilling to listen to any differing points of view.
