It could be a corrupt file in windows, try to boot in safe mode and do a system restore.....
Press F8 while booting and follow instructions to do a restore....
If the hard drive is booting, most likely its windows, not a dead hard drive.....if the drive were bad you would never even make it to the logon screen....

the boot up windows logo screen uses a standard vga screen setting, any card will show it. the standard display, however does not. it usually uses a device dependant driver.
the new HD has the correct driver installed. go into that one, and get the driver info, then try booting in safe mode on the old one, and see if it's the same one. if it's booting( showing windows anything) then it is not the bios, or even probably the HD(although a scandisk is required to tell for sure, perhaps a bad sector that happens to hold yourdisplay driver, i wouldn't bet on it) it is most likely windows trying to use the card a way it can't be. that's the display driver.

Probably related to a loss of power while the hard drive was writing data. The drive may have bad sectors (the drive is physically damaged inside) on it. Could be casued by spyware hanging the system then you inadvertantly pushing the power or reset button while the HDD is being accessed.

The problem is that the boot sector is damaged on your old hard drive. You should send it back to the manufacturer. If it's out of warranty, you could try a low level format. Low level formats require software from the hard drive manufacturer, usually downloadable from their website.
