Update: Dell is know for making low end pc's to fill a niche in the market, if you want something reliable, I would suggest anything but dell.....

Get a Dell XPS 1210. If you have are going to be traveling a lot this is perfect because its very compact. I own one and its perfect. With a 1700 dollar budget you can upgrade things on it to fit your needs. Make sure you also get the long lasting battery... and then just keep adding upgrades until you hit your budget limit.....I dont think you will be disappointed with that model

Never go for 512 MB ram now, u'll miss out on windows vista. 512 mb is history now, 1 GB is standard, even for home. most dealers , like dell provide free upgrades.
