Generally, many people want the government to take care of them. With a communist government, it does just that. The people get told just about everything and so long as they follow the government's directives, they can exist without much effort on their part. And that's the real catch here...
Without that "push" from a competitive environment, you tend to have less innovation and growth in ones society. On the whole, communism has been shown to not work. Don't you think the Soviet Union would have continued if they could have justified it? Of course they would!
The countries that practice communism such as China, allow a small part to be capitalistic and it's that part that is growing and prospering, NOT the communistic side.

you have to seperate out the ideals of Engels/marx from the actual implementation. While it's a nice utopia, it's unrealistic but it deserves a discussion. The foundation of communism is that we are all equal and share equally ... again, sounds great on paper but clearly not a real life workable solution because we are all too human. While we have our giving and caring moments and we can be altruistic - countries have proven a) it doesn't work for long as people are competitive and b) countries that purport to be communist essentially all evolve into authortative governments (see all eastern bloc) countries where everyone is equal but of course, some are much more equal than others but there are still naive people who ignore all the facts and believe "one day." Ironically, a lot of these "lefties" are rich - just try and walk into their houses and help yourself to something of theirs :-)
If you want to start a philosophical fight - look at the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND - naive communistic program?

The only ones who find Communism acceptable are the ones who are either in the Communist Party, running Communist countries, or those who have NEVER lived under the tyranny of Communism and think it's this ideal life where all are treated as equals, and the state provides for all the needs of the people. If they were to indeed live under Communism, they would change their tune quickly.

Traditional Communist Governments weren't Totalitarian like most think, that idea came from the USSR and stalins totalitarian control over the government and now the newer communists see Stalins communism as the regular/correct way, communism isn't meant to be part of a political party it was meant as an economic ideal of everyone working together equally to help each other.

You have to really read about communism to see why many people find it appealing. Basicly what makes it appealing is communists will tell you under a pro communist government(basicly a socialist state with an ideal to eventually become communist in the future) that you will work less, race will dissapear, you can smoke weed and everyone will party and have sex.

It seems that in societies where it's been adopted, it's either been accepted as a viable alternative by an already impoverished or oppressed people or it's been forced on them through military power. Then you have an elite in power, those who participate in the system because it's the only way to get ahead, a vast majority of drudges and the few who complain and are crushed. Gee, that sounds a whole lot like fascism, doesn't it?

Because it is. Communism is at least "remotely acceptable" because, if you have not noticed, capitalism is an immensely wasteful system and it leads to the disruption of democracy.

If you were to study political science you'd be able to develop an informed opinion on your own.
The way I figure it, aside from the usual reason of those in power liking to stay there, it is the most efficient method of governing and meeting the basic needs of the largest number of people using the least amount of resources. Nobody is very happy, except those in power, but most everyone gets to eat most days, and have somewhere to sleep, and work of some sort

First, it's an economic model not a political model. It deals solely with property ownership, not with who is in charge or how the laws get made.
And it actually works quite well on the small scale when it is voluntary. Voluntary being the key word.
It only starts to break down (badly) when a govt tries to force on a nation. When most people think of communism, they are thinking of the fascist or totalitarian countries that have tried to force communism as part of their control structure.

The people who find communism acceptable have never had to live under a communist regime.
The liberal extremists who preach their communist socialist agenda simply do not grasp that when their dream of a communist utopia is established, they will be the first to be imprisoned into gulags (i.e clinton, pelosi, kennedy, etc.)
