Why do you think anyone would be offended? They shouldn't be. Before I answer this I need to point out that like you, I am also not a racist; this has to be disclosed because there are a lot of insecure and paranoid people out there. Do they sound different? Well, that depends on where they're from i.e. I have black friends - several who are British, one from Germany, and one from Trinidad. These friends of mine do not sound any different than anyone else. My British black friends have a British accent and speak very proper English. Now, in the United States that's a different story, resulting in it being quite obvious that they are black. Here's why: They - NOT EVERYONE, but a vast majority tend to speak in Ebonics, a rather poor version of English laced with somewhat colourful metaphors and poor grammar, thus making it obvious that they are black.

It depends on what part of the country you are from. In big cities like New York and L.A. blacks have there own way of talking and you probably could tell you were talking to a black person. A lot of black people though can sound white, you know no accent or slang etc. Down south blacks and whites can sound the same. It would be impossible to tell the difference on the phone with a strong southern accent from white or black. There are lots of blacks that speak with English accents. Or any number of language accents from around the world.

Working at a business where I would usually speak to a customer before I met them, I've found I was about 90% accurate if they would show up as black or white. So you can get a good idea on how they speak.

No. The only thing you can tell about a person on the telephone is their accent. Accents are generally attributable to cultural and regional factors, not just race.

Why do you care? Won't call up a black person & find out. But be prepared to get hung up on.

It depends on their upgringing and education. If they live ' in da hood' then yes. If they're educated, and want to succeed in life, then no. This goes either way.
