I was prescribed 5mg/500mg and told to take one once every 4hrs. as needed. I took two about about 80 minutes ago and it's not even making a dent. Can I take another one now, or is it too much?

This prescription is back from when I had my fall and the extent of the damage I did to my teeth was still unknown. I took it maybe one or twice and it hit the spot. I was told that I've got a pretty weak dose in those pills. Basically, I had work done on my mouth, and figuring that they worked before, told him I didn't need any. But I think I need a stronger dose.
If I took another one, what would happen? At this point I don't care if it makes me a lil dopey or makes me pass out. Just as long as it doesn't stop my heart.

If you do not have a tolerance to hydrocodone then taking high doses will depress your breathing which is potentially fatal but you would more than likely notice this happening or at least a "doped up" feeling. The most you could take in a 24 hour period of that dosage is 8 tablets. The liver can only handle 4000mg of acetaminophen, after that your doing serious damage to your liver. The two primary reasons people overdose on opioid analgesics are from depressed breathing and liver toxicity, if you don't have a tolerance to opiates be very cautious.

How should I take acetaminophen and hydrocodone?
Follow all directions on your prescription label. Never take this medicine in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed. An overdose can damage your liver or cause death. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in relieving your pain.
Hydrocodone may be habit-forming, even at regular doses. Never share this medicine with another person, especially someone with a history of drug abuse or addiction. MISUSE OF NARCOTIC MEDICINE CAN CAUSE ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR DEATH, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription. Selling or giving away acetaminophen and hydrocodone is against the law.
Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
This medicine can cause unusual results with certain urine tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using acetaminophen and hydrocodone.
If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using this medicine. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.
Do not stop using this medicine suddenly after long-term use, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when you stop using acetaminophen and hydrocodone.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Keep track of the amount of medicine used from each new bottle. Hydrocodone is a drug of abuse and you should be aware if anyone is using your medicine improperly or without a prescription.
Always check your bottle to make sure you have received the correct pills (same brand and type) of medicine prescribed by your doctor. Ask the pharmacist if you have any questions about the medicine you receive at the pharmacy.

He's given you the lowest dose. It comes in 7.5 and 10 mg as well. But DO NOT take more right now. Just call him in the morning and ask him if he can either increase the doseage or give you something different (like darvocet or ms contin). If you take more than the prescribed dose, you run a HUGE risk of damaging your liver.

You can only take 2 every 4 hours. That's the max. No, you need to call your doctor if it's not touching the pain. Taking more will just make you sick. Even if it's night, call him right now.

the max is usually 2 every 6 hrs cause of the Tylenol content. If you take too much you can screw up you liver. So, don't do it. Liver damage is sometimes irreversible.

I've seen orders for vicodin that read 2 every 3 to 4 hours....but please realize, that if you have to take this much vicodin for pain and it's not doing any good, then maybe you should call the doctor and ask him or her to prescribe something else. Obviously the vicodin IS NOT WORKING.
