The primary satire is of supposedly religious personalities. There is also satire of parental authority and romance.

It is primarily a satire of those who fake extreme religious devotion or modesty whilst concealing their own self-advancing motives, of hypocrisy. A "Tartuffe" has passed into the French language meaning a faker, a hypocrite.
