I'm sorry, but the person must be currently living. I must be able to interview them, either by phone, in person, or e-mail.

Thanks

Famous typographer, book illustrator, and graphic artist Warren Chappell (1904 - 1991) was born in Richmond, Virginia. After studying at the Art Students League in New York, he set up a studio there in 1932 and pursued a joint career as graphic artist/book illustrator and typographer/book designer. As the former, he illustrated many classic texts -- such as "Gulliver's Travels," "Moby Dick," "Wolf Story," "The Nutcracker," "A Charles Dickens Christmas," and "Sleeping Beauty." As the latter, he designed two admired typefaces, Lydian and Trajanus (see a font similar in appearance or concept to Trajanus: Holland Seminar). He wrote several books on typography, including the classic "Short History of the Printed Word." Chappell ended his career as artist in residence at the University of Richmond, his alma mater.

Well... Ansel Adams is dead, but he was (and is) hugely popular as a commercial artist. Living, Anne Lebiowitz has shot magazine covers, photospreads and books for years, as has David La Chapelle. Both of them produce their work and are very commercially successful, and still highly regarded as artists-putting on shows in galleries, creating pieces worth collecting, etc.

Graphic artists have come to the forefront especially in what used to be called "comic books" but is now known as "graphic novels". Alan Moore and Frank Miller are two of the fields pioneers, and both have been enormously successful financially as well as creatively.

Ansel Adams. He was an outdoor photographer and probably was the one person who photographed Yosimite National Park. His work was featured in National Geographic and his work is highly collected.
