Keep in mind that the pay in Japan is high... but the cost of living is even higher. I have a cousin teaching in Japan and she's making good money, but can barely save anything because the cost of living is so high.
I'm in South Korea and I love it. My husband and I live on one income and enjoy ourselves royally. If you're single you'll be making plenty of money.
There are horror stories about teaching english anywhere. The responsiblity is with you. You have to do the research and get the references.
As for Koreans being "strict" or "rude"... I sure haven't seen it. In fact I would be more likely to say they are too friendly and polite. The trick is to learn about the culture. If you learn a bit of the language and "polite" behavior the people will treat you very well.
Check out Dave's ESL Cafe and visit the Korean Job Forums (I Don't have the web address off hand but if you do a google search it's the first one to come up). They also have a great contract review thread. Make sure you do the research on what is legal in a contract etc. I did 2 months of research before I signed a contract.
Also, I would suggest going through a reputable recruiter. I used ATC (Avail Teacher Consulting) and found them to be amazing. A lot of folks have also said that Footprints Recruiting is great.

South Korea has a very strict society. I have heard several horror stories from friends teaching there. japan is much the same, but the schools are more professional.
I have lived and taught in Mexico for 4 years. Love it here.
Check out the posts on this site regarding experiences in different countries.

The best organization to send you to Japan is the JET Program:
http://www.jetprogram.org
But Interac is good too,
http://www.interac.co.jp
JET pays more ($30k per year) and offers more support, but both are good to work for and will often send you to parts of Japan that most tourists never get to see.
