W=winter, S=summer. If you live in snowy/icy conditions select W and the car will start in second gear and change up at lower rpm. This W mode is intended to reduce wheel spin and slippage due to winter conditions. If you dont have snow and ice just select S all year round.

You have lots of correct answers. They did away with the 'W' setting on later models with 'traction control' and the ability to 'manually' select 2nd, and instead give you 'S' and 'C' The 'C' being for 'comfort' and the 'S' for sport. It simply changes the gear-change patterns of the gearbox - ie the 'sport' setting will hold the gears longer on acceleration and will 'kick down' quicker.

The W will allow the transmission to start you out in second gear. This is supposed to reduce tire spin in snowy conditions. I live in a very snowy area, and I keep it on S all year.
