why is the word gay being thrown around schools so much these days?

everyday at school i hear some say something is gay or a person is gay atleast a hundred times a day. its the main insult to everyone in the class. Is it because there homophobic and afraid someone will think there gay

If there weren't so many gays in the world today, I really don't think it would be used that much.
