Different colleges have different rules. It's usually recommended, but not required, to live on campus your freshman year only. You can get a private room in most dorms, for an additional monthly fee.

Yes it is possible at most schools but its pretty expensive, I lived in the dorms for the 1st two years the first with a roomie and the second without. I was lucky the first year I had a roomie who went home every weekend and I worked a lot so it worked out. I paid about 1.5 the amount the 2nd year to have my own room. Most school do not make you live on campus the 1st year but they recommend it because the drop out rate for 1st time freshman is a lot lower for those who live on campus.

Most schools require at least one year living on campus, but some require two years. Depending upon the size of the school you could get a single room, often you can request one, but I wouldn't count on it. Its not so bad to have a roommate; it gives you someone to hang out with while you make more friends on campus.

I don't think they allow you to live off campus the first year, especially when your parents live elsewhere. They offer you dorms for the first two years [unless your married], and for some schools, they won't allow you to have a single room, only if it's your third/fourth year.

Eh, go to a community college for the first year or two. Then you won't have to worry about it when you transfer to a university!

(They also let you out of that particular "rule" if you're married or have a child.)
