I've heard people say it's bad to rub your eyes. Obviously I understand it would be bad if you had something dangerous like a chemical in your eyes. But is it bad otherwise, if you're eye just itched or you were sleepy? If so what damage does it do?

It is not a good idea because your hands touch everything so therefore you have all types of good and bad bacteria on your hands so if that is introduced into your eye it can produce and infection which can lead into more serious thing your eye so fragile and if you rub to hard and your eyes or dry or somethings is in it you can scratch your natural lens on your eyes and cause damage that may not be noticeable at first but with the aging process it will become a factor that is why it is important to keep your eyes moist by doing complete blinks (making sure your eyelids touch during a blink) and use moisture drops if needed and fatigued sleepy eyes get some sleep!

My eye doctor informed me that since I wear contact lenses, rubbing your eyes frequently can cause small scratches on the surface of your eye. He also said that the eye is one of the fastest healers on the human body. You don't want to rub in the indent under your eye to often, like when you are removing eye make-up due to the long term effect of wrinkles. There is thin skin there. And it is easy to damage.

Of course not...we all do it, it's natural for all of us to rub our eyes when we wake up or when we're tired.

Now, like you point out, rubbing your eyes after getting some foreign object in it could possibly scratch the cornea and you should never rub your eyes if you accidentally splash a chemical into them so you can easily flush them out.
