The two best AGP cards available now are the nVidia 7800GS and the ATI X1950 Pro. The X1950 Pro is about 50% faster than the 7800GS, in most games. In a few games (the ones "optimized" for nVidia cards), they are about even. It seems that nVidia has completely given up on AGP, while ATI hasn't: ATI even has an X1950XT planned for AGP.

Here are some suggestions:

I would however suggest upgrading to a PCI-X motherboard if possible for the future.

Im not a big fan of ATI, but I can advise on Nvidia....

So far the best model for AGP is the GeForce 7000 models....

You can get an Nvidia GeForce 7800gs.....Try to get one made by BFG, they have a lifetime warranty on their cards.....

Nvidia only makes the graphics chip, other manufacturers actually use the Nvidia chip to build a graphics card....

Um, well ATI still produced AGP after it continued to be phased out. Um the ATI 1880 is pretty good. But newegg.com should give you a nice variety of options.
