It does not say format. It says Install.
Follow these steps:

Firstly you put the installation CD in (you have to start your computer first to enable the CD drive to move). Then restart the computer. To a certain extent, the screen will show 'Push any key to boot from CD' and you have to click on any key, either Enter or Spacebar, it doesn't matter. Then wait for the installation files to be copied onto your computer. It does this automatically, so don't worry. Then it will display the drives where you can install your OS. Usually people do it on C drive. But firstly you have to Delete the C drive to erase whatever OS that have been on the C drive. Then you have to create it back. All of this can be done by following the instruction on the screen. Then follow the instruction to install the OS on the C drive. For your information, OS means Operating System, like in your case, Windows Xp.

If you are going to install XP it will convert your drive for you before the install. If you use a '98 boot disk format tool, it will just format back to fat 32. If all else fails, you can use the f/disk tool to remove the partitions, then install XP it will ask you if you want to enable large disk support, say "yes" and you are on your way. Good luck - Gary

Boot to Windows XP CD. It should ask whether you want to repair the existing installation. Say no. There should be prompts to erase the partition and reformat the hard drive. If you want an easy, bootable solution, you can download one from this site:
