I was just wondering how you go about this. I want to make sure my car seat is properly installed for my little one. I know the fire department checks this out for you so what I was wondering is do I have to wait for a specific event where they do this or can I just bring my car down for inspection?
I know I should probably just call, but I thought I would ask first. I feel silly bothering the fire department if you know what I mean.

I'm in Alberta and the inspections are done at firehalls only once a month here, so I'd definitely call before going.

www.car-seat.org has lots of good info to help you get your seat installed right, and most hospitals will also check that your baby is buckled in to the carrier properly before releasing you. The hospitals I've had my kids at have never inspected the actual installation in my car though.

Your local health department might be able to tell you who to contact to find out about a car seat clinic, or visit safekids.org that somebody else posted and find a certified carseat tech in your area. Congrats on the upcoming arrival of your little one.

I live in Utah and the Health Department does free car seat checks. They do them twice a week and they are very helpful. They told us that 9 out of 10 people use their car seats wrong so I would for sure go. I would call the health department before calling the fire department.

Yes, go to the fire department. Don't worry, you won't be "bothering" them. They see horrible, horrible accidents where children are injured or worse from improperly installed carseats. I am fairly certain they'd rather see more parents doing what you're doing. You don't have to wait for an event... although they do have them. Your child's pediatrician's office can probably tell you when and where they will be held. You will also probably wait longer in these lines than if you just go at a random time to the fire department (speaking from experience there...ha!). Good luck!

Not all fire departments do this check, you have to have certified personal that work there to do it. Your best bet is to call the fire departments main office and the secretary should be able to give you information or at least direct you in that way. Other places to try calling are police departments and hospitals Good Luck

Before going home with the baby, a nurse or a personnel who is an expert with car safety seats for baby will teach you on how to do this. Usually they will instruct you on how to secured the car seat at the back and and how to secure your baby with the harness and how the baby should be facing like rear facing for baby less than 1 year old.

where to you live? In BC, Canada, by law you must have a car seat inspection before you leave the hospital. See if your hospital might have a vehical inspection office

Also here in BC, if you don't have it properly installed and you get pulled over, you get seriously fined and they will inspect at the police station

No, you don't have to call first. They would probably love to see the baby and help out. Take a plate of cookies or brownies with you to show your appreciation. These guys and gals work longs hard hours and sacrifice time away from their families. I am sure they wold be happy to help.

I think you need to ring up and they will tell you a time to come down. I'm pretty sure that theres a certain person that checks them so you need to make sure theyre there.
