the very best knives you can afford, a large platic cutting board, a set of mixing bowls with lids, a 10 inch skillet with lid, a dutch oven (soup pot) and a 9 x 13 glass baking dish.
oh, and a wooden spoon.
alot of it depends on what types of stuff you like to cook, and how many you are cooking for.
almost forgot- a 2cup glass measuring cup.

As a beginner I suggest a rubber spatula, toaster, coffee maker, blender with metal shaft instead of the rubber star shaft(it will last longer). Don't buy your essentials in sets. Buy them separately and buy the best. When you buy cheap stuff the materials the utensils are made of gets into your food. The same goes for pots and pans. buy the best one piece at a time and buy something that will last a long time such as Salad Master. Whisks are excellent to have around and a collections of different large knives. (Keep them high so kids can't get to them)

Essentials? First of all, you need a Gas stove or an electric hot-plate cooker.
Apart from pots and pans, --acording to the kind of food you want to cook-- get a good Cookery (Recipes) Book. A boxful of spices, essences, and peppers shold be sufficient to get you off the ground.

A quality 8" chef knife, small paring knife. A large (3'x4')plastic cutting board makes life easy. A quality frying/saute pan, 2qt. sauce pot, 6qt stock pot. High heat silicone spatulas, avoid wooden tools they're too hard to clean. Colander. If you love garlic a metal garlic press also makes life easy. Vegetable peeler. Patience :)

Along with a good quality sauce pan and frying pan, make sure you have a good stainless steel mixing bowl.
