Well I am a groomer and I will tell you they shed like crazy, so I hope you can deal with that. Don't get you golden shaved, just good baths and lots of brushing.
Its a working dog and you need to give your dog a job or a lot of exercise. Not just playing the backyard either. You need to take your dog for walks, hikes, runs, whatever.....exercise. Thats how you will prevent your dog from destroying things.
Every dog is an individual. Goldens are easy to train and they are eager to please their person. But again, not every dog is the same, so just because these are traits of a golden, doesn't mean yours will be like that. I recommend looking at shelters, petfinder.com, pounds, etc.

Goldens are usually very well behaved and smart. They tend to be kinda needy ( wanting to be with you all the time) They need alot of grooming especially when shedding time comes. Start out easy on the tricks( like sit) yes I think a treat is the easiest way to train a dog because dogs are very food motivated. If you get your hands on a good golden you will have no problems with training my golden mix was housetrained in 2 days. If it is a very young puppy it is easier to train them if you keep them in a smaller area ( not running through the whole house) put some newspaper down on half of the area if he/she goes potty off the paper show he/she the mess (say bad in a stern voice)and put it on the paper it should only take a few days for it to get the hang of it then you can introduce it to the rest of the house. If it has an accident take it to the paper slowly moving the paper to the door to go out. I had a dog that was so paper trained that I had to put newspaper in the yard. Enjoy your Golden they are wonderful dogs!

I love golden retrievers. My brother has had several over the years. To bad he's in Ohio and I'm in CA or I'd ask him.

Here is a website that you'll learn to love. It will answer a lot of your questions, plus they have a forum.

Before any of that, research what kind of genetic or hereditary problems they may get and make sure that the puppy's parents have been screened. That will save you a lot of heartache in the long run. I know that they have a problem with hip dyplasia, for instance.

Here is a site for training:

i have a golden retriever/chow mix, and he's the best dog i've EVER had...we found him as a stray, and when we brought him into the house, it took a few weeks to teach him to go to the bathroom outside. if we would come home and see he went on the floor, we'd bring him over to it, scold him, and carry it outside (i know, gross, but it works!) and put it always in the same place in the yard..that way he eventually learned to go in that place each time. our dog never really digs or destroys anything in the house...and we've taught him a few basic tricks, but all you need for that is a big bag of treats...good luck!!

I have two goldens currently and have had two in the past. They are very gentle, loving friendly dogs. They need lots of attention. If you are not prepared to spend a lot of time with your dog every day, don't get a golden. They NEED to be with people. You can't just put one out in your backyard and leave it. They need to be in the house, sleep in at night and be part of the household. they also need plenty of exercise every day. So make sure you have time to meet your dog's needs for attention and exercise.

They do shed, but I find their longer hair easier to pick up than the short hairs of many breeds which seem to get everywhere. You must brush, brush brush.

They are extremely easy to train because they really want to please their people. For housebreaking, I did crate training which was very effective (see link). Both of my dogs learned fast. I also recommend getting enrolled in an obedience class early so you can learn to train your dog. Pick a trainer that only uses gentle positive methods. These dogs want to please and don't need harsh methods.

I've had little problem with chewing and destuction. These dogs need toys to carry around in their mouths. Provide lots of toys like nylabones and tennis balls so they have appropriate things to chew. If you catch them chewing on something they shouldn't, substitute one their toys.

Sorry, but by past experience and as a person who loves dogs and have always had them, they are not that smart.
We have a local dog park which has a huge amount of dogs in it at times and I always notice the retrievers as being the dopiest of dogs. So unless you have a lot of patience and a lot of time for training go for something else.

Having a trained dog isn’t the same as having a balanced dog, but if your dog knows a few basic commands, it can be helpful when tackling problem behaviors — existing ones or those that may develop in the future. Learn here https://tr.im/gsrNo

So where do you start with dog obedience training? You could take a class, but it’s not necessary; you can do it yourself. In fact, with the right attitude, it can be fun for both you and your dog!
Step 1 : Sit
This is one of the easiest dog obedience commands to teach, so it’s a good one to start with.
• Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose.
• Move your hand up, allowing his head to follow the treat and causing his bottom to lower.
• Once he’s in sitting position, say “Sit,” give him the treat, and share affection.
Repeat this sequence a few times every day until your dog has it mastered. Then ask your dog to sit before mealtime, when leaving for walks, and during other situations where you’d like him calm and seated.
Step 2 : Come
This command can help keep a dog out of trouble, bringing him back to you if you lose grip on the leash or accidentally leave the front door open.
• Put a leash and collar on your dog.
• Go down to his level and say, “Come,” while gently pulling on the leash.
• When he gets to you, reward him with affection and a treat.
Once he’s mastered it with the leash, remove it — and practice the command in a safe, enclosed area.
Step 3 : Down
This can be one of the more difficult commands in dog obedience training. Why? Because the position is a submissive posture. You can help by keeping training positive and relaxed, particularly with fearful or anxious dogs.
• Find a particularly good smelling treat, and hold it in your closed fist.
• Hold your hand up to your dog’s snout. When he sniffs it, move your hand to the floor, so he follows.
• Then slide your hand along the ground in front of him to encourage his body to follow his head.
• Once he’s in the down position, say “Down,” give him the treat, and share affection.
Repeat it every day. If your dog tries to sit up or lunges toward your hand, say “No” and take your hand away. Don’t push him into a down position, and encourage every step your dog takes toward the right position. After all, he’s working hard to figure it out!
