The basic difference is that Republicans follow a conservative philosophy and Democrats follow a liberal philosophy.
A liberal would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee the economy. Liberals say it's proper for government to ensure that companies do the right thing (such as pay minimum wages), and to ensure that people act responsibly in their finances (such as requiring contributions to retirement savings).
A conservative would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee morality. Conservatives say it's proper for government to ensure that people are punished for immoral acts (such as taking drugs), and that people act appropriately in their marriages (such as banning homosexual marriage).

I suggest you look for an old Kurt Vonnegut collection called "Wampeters, Foma and Grandfalloons." In it is a piece he wrote for Harper's Bazaar as coverage of the 1972 Republican National Convention titled, "In a Manner that Must Shame God Himself."
I have always felt that his description of the difference between Republicans and Democrats came as close to the truth as any. Read it and weep.

I agree with popcandy but I would frame it as a division along class lines. Democrats/liberals seek to regulate capitalist activity because this is in the interest of of the poor and working classes. Republicans seek to regulate morality because this is in the interest of the upper, capitalist classes.
The lines are not hard and fast and in practice there isnt as much difference between the parties as I'd like.
I'm inclined to vote the interests of the lower, working classes because they are always by far going to be the majority of the population and I doubt a society can be much good to live in if they are being exploited or suppressed in general.
So I vote Democrat in general, though again there isnt as much difference between the parties as Id like. It would probably be fairer to say I vote against Republicans, they being representatives of the upper classes as I see them, and therefore having more potential and advantage as a threat to egalitarianism and progress in society.

Republicans - free markets, religious social values
Democrats - (limited!) economic intervention, social freedom
both have good points, but flaws as well. Start with complete freedom (libertarianism, anarchism) and be responsible about what gets regulated. If you feel welfare is neccessary for social health, you're democrat. If you feel strict religious values should be extremely important, you are republican. But with small caps until you learn more.

I'm an independent. The Democrat and Republican parties are pretty much the same party now.

I am Libertarian. I think the government should leave me alone and let me run my own life. If I want to smoke, eat trans-fat etc., it is none of their business. That includes al the busybody do-gooders that think they need to tell me how to live!

The difference is that both of these parties contain members intelligent enough who know how to spell and capitalize. The difference is that you cannot, and since you cannot pose an intelligent question, I will not give you an intelligent response.
