The album you're referring to is Charlie Daniels Band "Million Dollar Reflections" album that came out in 1979.
The origional version od the song had the line as follows'I told you once, you son of a ***** I'm the best that's ever been,' but in 1979 the family interest groups & others bycotted this version after the radio station bleeped the word at first, so the radio stations had C.Daniels band do a version with this line in it if he wanted his song to be played on their stations--the line was as follows 'I told you once you son of a gun I'm the best that's ever been.' This change of words satisfied all the groups, radio censors etc. & became the most widely version used at the time[1979 onwards.]
If you hear the song nowadays, sometimes you'll get the origional line version or the revised version, depending on who's playing it etc. The old 8 tracks & cassettes had both versions out if I recall corectly, as I had them & now have the revised version on a remastered c.d. collection from the 60's 70' & 8o's.(I may have the origional version in my L.P. collection that I have, but I havn't looked at that collection for some time now, as everything is on c.d.s these days. Maybe I'll iake a look for curisoty sake in a few days or so.)
P.S. a little tidbit for everyone who's a country fan-- Another song that was banned by radio stations in the 70's because Loretta Lynn refused to change any wording of it[which I agree with & love it, as well as all her music] was 'The Pill.' (1972)>> Their was some real censoring going on back then, as the radio stations bowed to the people who protested & lobbyed such nonsense, if the politicans wanted their votes etc.
Later:>>>>Hope this helps U: REBELCAT.****GD./NGHT P.S.S..You'll have to look up C.Daniels on the web, as when I put the word used on the origional version on here they just insert stars for the word used in it.[Hint--She Dog.]

For anyone that is currently looking for this, like I was, I finally found it. It is NOT on the Million Mile Reflections album like suggested above. I found it on the Columbia Country Classics, Vol 3: Americana album. So frustrating that places like itunes and amazon don t actually mark the clean one for us to find easily, but hopefully this helps someone else who would rather not have their kids hear "son of b***h" too.

Try a country dance cd, b/c when I was in school we had to do a project w/ that song and we went to every store that sold C.D.B. and they all had that one little word in it.
