im thinking no with the exception of during different sections... and definately not during the repeat of a section. what do you think?

yeah sure why not. it seems more meaningful cos it sounds sif ure telling a story like

e.g.
im preparing to go a long way etc..
then, im prepared to go a long way etc..
then, i was prepared and im going a long way from here or something like that. its cool :)

I think that tense must be maintained during a stanza. In a refrain, you can change tense, but not switching back and forth.

I don't see any problem with it unless it will confuse people. Lots of songs say something like I loved you from the beginning and then they jump to I'll always love you.

It depends on the theme. Reba did a bit of change in Fancy. If you do it, it has to flow right or it is very obvious.
