When i am working on my computer on the internet, or opening excel or word or other programs I get a page open up that is totally blank.Across the top it says about:blank-microsoft internet explorer and then I can only shrink i. I cannot close it. What is this and how can I fix the problem please?

ctrl+alt+del go to the processes tab click iexplorer and terminate

Sounds like a virus, try updating your definitions and running a full system scan. Also try this program www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html it is a fairly efficient spyware remover. If this fails open up task manager and goto processes and goto iexplore.exe and end task. That should close the box down along with all other copies of internet explorer.

The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team recommends you not use Internet Explorer:
"There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone...It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser"

Sounds like a popup and spyware. You should have a popup blocker or use Firefox, which has a built in blocker. You should run a scan for spyware on your PC as soon as possible. One more thing, make sure that you have firewall software installed.
