For example, if you multiply these binomials:
(x + 2)(x + 2)
You get:
x2 + 4x + 4

Anything that is equal to a number times itself is a perfect square.
1 x 1=1, so 1 is a perfect square
2 x 2=4, so 4 is a perfect square
3 x 3=9, so 9 is a perfect square
and so on.

a perfect square is a number which, when you take the square root of it, isn't a funny fraction or endless decimal thing, it turns out to be a whole number.
EG: 4^2 = 16 (16 is a perfect square)
but the square root of 12 is ugly, with a whole shartload of decimals, so it's not a perfect square

a perfect square is a number that when square rooted comes out to be a whole number. 4, 9, 16 are perfect squares because they will be 2,3,4 respectfully. If you try to square root 5 it will be 2. something and thus not a perfect square
