As in comics (zzzZZZzzzZZZ) and the saying, catching Z's. How did Z's become related to sleeping? I can't figure it out. The only thing I can think of is that some artist used it in a comic and it just stuck.

The sound is commonly made by people who breathe very heavily when asleep, or snoring. But if you've lived amongst snorers, you'll know there's a wide variety of disturbing sounds available. Most of them are more difficult to represent than the simpler "Zzzz".

I think it has to do with the type of sound people make when they are sleeping like snoring.... It kinda sounds like a deep buzzing bee.

I believe it is from the sound of snoring. Sometimes it sounds like a saw, which is also often identified with Zs (as in buzz saw).
