The producers originally wanted Matthew Broderick to play Alex P. Keaton, but the actor had to decline the role when his father became terminally ill.

i'm pretty sure michael j. fox played alex right from the beginning.
and in reply to the last answer, i don't think Eric Stoltz was tested for family ties, it was for Back To The Future movie, as the role of Marti that he was tested for, of course michael j. fox got that role instead.

It was always Michael J. Fox. I believe the show tested with Eric Stoltz (?) but it never ran with anyone but Fox.
