I don't know about where you are but here in the Midwest the weather would have a lot to do with it. With all the snow and cold who wants to work outside taking down lights? It's just not been safe to climb around taking down lights as you would be risking life and limb to do so with it being so slick with snow and ice. Now that the weather has finally warmed up a bit for a few weeks there are so many other things needing attention that I am sure that for most people the lights still being up are of little concern.

Maybe an older couple that cannot get out much live in that home. Could be that those people just havent got the time or just maybe they think that life is just too short, why waste it on doing things of this sort (that means the same thing year after year) when they can just keep them hangin and enjoy the time they have doing what it is that they actually like!

Some people just like the way they look, I think that it looks cool in the summer if they have them on, but only if they are the clear fatter bulbs. We have them strung along out backyard in the summer and when we turn them on it lights up the backyard a bit. It looks pretty. "...I leave my Christmas lights on, on my front porch all year long..." in the words of Gretchen Wilson, the country singer. :) I know what you mean though, it looks tacky if they are the multi colored lights and it isn't christmas.... preferance I guess, and a little bit redneck I suppose, but there is nothing wrong with that!

Strange, isn't it? Someone about a mile from here still has one of those metal white spiral trees up in their front yard, along with all the reindeer and other ornaments. Sooner or later, they'll have to take them all down in order to mow the lawn! It's just got to be laziness!

It's not always due to laziness or trashiness... sometimes lights are left up because you'd need a cherry picker twice a year to put up/take down the lights. And that would be bothersome & expensive.

Lazy and burnt out on the holiday and then after a while one might think, "well it's half-way to Christmas again, I might as well leave them up".

While driving a few weeks ago my 7 year old son asked this same question. Several seconds later my 3 year old son said "they are still waiting for their presents".
