Hey there!
I have been breastfeeding my baby boy for two months now, and plan on continuing for as long as he wants. I asked this question to a registered dietician at my local WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) office and she told me that since the food is absorbed in the bloodstream, not a lot goes into the milk. I have been eating any and everything, though in moderation, and even though my son does spit up occasionally, he doesn't seem to be fussy about it. I don't know if it's because I ate and drank pretty much all of the same stuff when I was pregnant that I eat now that maybe he got used to the different flavors in the amniotic fluid or what. I was told that if it does seem like he is in pain after eating then to cut out one likely irritant at a time, usually starting with cow's milk. Thankfully I haven't had to cut anything out, especially milk, since I drink three glasses a day!
Anyway, unless your baby really does have digestion problems, I would think that you should be able to eat whatever, but in moderation. And, I think you should get some other doctor's opinions because he seems to want you to cut out all important nutrients, except what's in fruits and veggies.

Hi there and Congratulations on being such an intelligent wonderful mother that you are breastfeeding your baby! You would not believe that even in this day where information is SO readily available there are still mothers who will knowingly deprive their babies of breastmilk. It is hard for me to imagine how a mother could do that but it happens much more often than I would have thougth possible. So, Major Kudo's to you!!
Alright, your question. Having successfully breastfed all four of my babies until they were well over 1 year old I can tell you that it varies for each baby. I know that is vague answer but it is truthful. Some of my babies clearly did not care what I had had to eat, others would not nurse if I ate garlic! It is just like the way one baby loves all different kinds of vegetables and another only wants corn or greenbeans! Every baby is different! Some are very picky and others are not. I have heard mothers swear that you should avoid dairy products, others swear to stay away from cabbage....some will say it is Mexican food...and then there are the mothers who insist that you should never feed your baby if you have your period return. It just all depends on your baby and there are no hard and fast rules. As long as you breastfeed that is all that matters! Just do it! You may have your baby turn up his little nose at one thing here or there but you will soon learn his little picky likes and dislikes. Most of all just keep doing it! What ever you do, don't give up! Any breastmilk is better for your baby than the finest formula! If he is nursing that is all that matters. Keep it up for as long as he will cooperate, it it is one year or two. The longer the better.
I hope I have helped answer your questions.
Love and Blessings
Lady Trinity~*********p.s. I just have to add that I ate chocolate when I breastfed all four of my babies and never had any problem what so ever. I also drank huge amounts of apple juice, in fact it was my favorite beverage along with iced tea and again, no problems. Cabbage and broccoli never gave my babies any gas and both foods are favorabley mentioned in the book published by the La Leche League as healthy foods for a nursing mother to eat. As I said, some babies are sensitive to certain foods for one reason or another but most babies are not effected by the foods that their mother eats. In fact I think it prepares them for the different flavors that they will experience when they eat solid food. Telling mothers that they have to change their diet only makes them feel that breastfeeding is full of rules and restrictions which it is not.******

I would steer clear of sugary foods and chocolate. I would eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies. You can still eat meat, just make sure it isn't spicey. Also, broccolli, onions, garlic, jalapeno peppers, and other gassy foods will also make the baby have a tummy ache. Drink LOTS of water!!!! When you are breastfeeding, basically keep thinking like when you were pregnant....what you eat, the baby eats too. That is how I did it. My daughter is almost 13 months old and I am still breastfeeding. After the baby is a few months old, their tummies are able to digest better and you won't have such a strict diet. It is well worth it!!!!! Just stick with it! Anyways, good luck and congrats on the new baby!!! Good job!

Sometimes colic can be stress induced! You need to try and be as calm as possible and get plenty of rest in addition stay away from greasy and spicy foods. Does Doc say no to all of these things? if you cut them all at once how can he tell which is the thing you are having issues with?! Ever thought of a second opinion?

check out kellymom.com or le lache league's website. Lot's of good info there. Anything you eay inadvertantly goes to the baby so dairy, chocolate, caffene are big ones to avoid, it could be causing stomach aches for your baby. Eat a good balances whole foods diet, cut out refined processed food with lots of chemicals, preservatives, sugars. Hope that helps!

Is the baby or the mother sensitive to these things? There are still meats and vegetables and fruit, but it is a limited diet. Why the limitations? Has the baby had problems?

i was told i can eat whatever i want. i was worried about eating spicy foods and my nurse told me it was okay. she said if i noticed the baby acts differently after eating a certain food, than i should eliminate it from my diet.
alcohol is pretty much the only thing to eliminate.

Avoid cereals, get enough pulses, protein rich food like cows milk, egg, fish, prawn, and juices, plenty of fruits, specially dates.
I have given a good menu.....if you follow this you will get all rich protein, and calories, and iron and vitamins and can have strong bones and rich milk for your babe.....its my experience%%%%%%%%
Please avoid spicy and chilly foods............nothing else

don't drink apple juice, or any kind of citrus juice, and , of course, apples and citrus fruit....no chocolate....take that from experience, no one told me not to eat chocolate while breastfeeding, and the day after i had a chocolate bar, my baby got soo sick throwing up everywhere and the chocolate is what caused it....and don't eat onions or any food that is gassy or the baby will get gassy
