In europe, i would assume you mean the Western Front (even though the war was won in the east).
The initial steps or battles that gave the allies the 'upper hand' took place after El Alemein, then came the landings in Italy, most notably , battle for Sicily, landing at Anzio and attack around Monte Casino. The major focus then shifted to the Normandy Invasion and Finally the Battle of the Bulge. The allies were bloodied at Aachen, but the battle of attrition was won by the allies. The 'air battle' was probably the most decisive factor in winning in the West, from El Alamein, to Normandy, as well as obliterating the German infrastructure in Germany itself.

D-Day, Kursk, Stalingrad, Bulge, and Battle for Britain. Stalingrad depleted Hitler's Eastern divisions, Kursk crippled his armor divisions, Britain depleted Luftwafte, D-Day pushed the Nazi forces back, and Bulge basically used up the last of HItler's resources.
