If you are talking about college, the exact details will depend on your major and the program you are in.
In general, a senior project is just that, a project. It is typically very detailed and encompasses something that builds on that you have learned on your program.
At the college I was at, it was treated much the same way a project would be treated at a business (in many cases, the senior project was a real business project. A company would give the students a problem to fix or something to build and that was their project).
I was in an Engineering program. We were required to keep extensive Engineering notebooks and write formal status reports at the end of every quarter. Our project lasted 1 school year. There were 4 of us in the group and our final paper was almost 1200 pages I believe (plus each of us had 1 or 2 Engineering notebooks). Our project was to build a wireless system to for use with cell phones on a motorcycle (this was in 1997 before such a thing existed). It used voice recognition to dial the numbers and had a wireless link between the helmet and the cell phone unit itself.
Another project I liked from that year was a team developed a microprocessor based system that leveled a pop-up camper/5th wheel automatically. The jacks popped down on their own and leveled the trailer at the push of a button.
When I went for my MBA, my project was much simpler. I wrote an original paper on a topic. Mine was on Survivor's Syndrome after Corporate Downsizing. My whole paper was about 50 pages and I knocked it out in about two weeks. I thought it was a joke compared to Engineering.
If you are in high school...I'm not sure what that all entails. We didn't have to do that at our high school.

well at my high school iT is A huge presentation that all the seniors have to do at the end of there senior english class. they research a topic in small groups....on how to improve the school...and present it formally to a school official...

at my school, we do a video clip about students in the school. basically, you just walk in the hall and hit on random people.
