I looked in a mirror at school and when i looked down at it, my face looked darker. But when i held it at eye level, my skin looked lighter. It couldn't have been the lighting as i was in the same room.

it could still be the lighting...you were probably blocking the light when you were looking down...your head was in the way. but when you held it up your head wasn't blocking the light

Yes, the lighting has a lot to do with it. Lighting from above the mirror casts shadows on the face. If you want to see your true self, and a more flattering self at that, then you need lighting on each side of your face.

while bending over to look in the mirror your head would block some of the light thus making your face look darker.

It's probably the shadow your making when you look down, and has nothing to do with the mirror

skin isn't opaque so any angle you look at your skin from can look different. light goes through each layer of skin and illuminates and goes to the next layer. this property is what makes skin look the way it does.
