The fact that it stops when you get off seems like it might be posture related. If it was muscular it would take awhile to subside proportional to the length of aggravation.

What's your emotional state when you ride?

One of the most common, and least diagnosed cause, of back pain is trigger points most often in the lower back area. Trigger points can be induced by emotion or trauma. If you are frightened or agitated when you ride that could be the cause.

BTW: Trigger Points are evidenced by small knots in the associated muscle. Fresh ones can often be reduced by local circular pressure on the knot.

I had Trigger Points for about 5 years following a fall. It had been misdiagnosed for years as a substantial injury requiring surgery. One day when I took my children to the Doctor, he recognized my problem by the way I was walking. He injected a local anesthetic in the knots and within seconds five-years of pain disappeared and more importantly did not return.

Spinal cord compression issues?

Excess weight?

Pulled muscle.

Try not riding horses for a while.

Have your kidnies checked. See if your muscles on the back are tender to the touch.

by the way, I am not being funny here.

i have been riding horses for over 10 years. if you are having back pain i would stop riding until you see a doctor just to make sure it isn't nothing serious.

Some of it may be technique but it sounds like you could be putting pressure on a nerve.
