Tune your low E string down to a D.
then when you play your D chord, you get a much fuller sound with it .
In my opinion there's not alot of options for playing other chords but if you do, just don't hit the low E unless it would sound good with whatever chord you played.
Some people can reach over and thumb the Low E string as they play other chords so it sounds normal.
many songs have been written and played around the Drop D tuning and they sound great.

These answers are correct and I add a twist. Here's double drop D since we're in the neighborhood.
D-A-D-G-B-D
Give this puppy a twirl.
But you asked how to drop a d tuning didn't you? So if you're
already in D-A-D-G-B-E for example you tune each of those strings down a half or, if your guitar can play it that loose, a whole step to C-G-C-F-A-D. Those babies will be flapping in the wind but you'll be lower than a well digger's a$$.

hi tpx! sounds like u want to lower ur "e" string (the fattest string on ur guitar) to a "d" - simply unwind the tuning key for your low "e" string a whole step until it is a "d". if u have a tuner, this is really easy to do - if not, just keep lowering the tuning of the low "e" string until it is in unison with the "d" string (two strings below the low "e" string). a lot of grunge bands like nirvana used this tuning: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dropped_d_tuning
once u get ur guitar rockin, please subscribe to my FREE video podcast on iTunes: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=183309259

Instead of tuning EADGBE (fat to small), you 'drop' the low E string to D. The tuning becomes DADGBE.
