Your father's debts end with his death and affect no one if his wife was also gone. You will need a lot of copies of the death certificate and a nice form letter saying approximately "As shown by the enclosed death certificate, Mr. Jones died on 28 February 2007 and leaves no widow. Please apply to the probate court for any relief in this matter." It may wipe out any equity on the house, if there was some, but other than the mess, you don't have to pay it off.

Talk to a finance lawyer or probate attorney. If you didn't co-sign, some of those debts may not be your responsibility. It depends on your location's laws and exactly what the debts are and only someone well versed in the laws and statutes will be able to advise you wisely.

My best advice would be like this. My parents really didnt do much of anything for me except push me into the world so I think I would file them for chapter 11 bankruptcy and trash their credit. Maybe your parents were decent people, I guess you might want to try auctioning their property and assets to see if you can come up with the money. Im sorry for your loss and these trying times.

I'm sorry for the passing of your parents.
You should probably speak to a probate attorney. If your father had an attorney, speak with them. Part of what you inherit might be the bills too. Some of them however, you may not be responsible for at all. If you are not responsible for them, then you don't have to pay them.

You should not be liable for your dad's debt unless you signed papers yourself. The debt should have died with him. Contact your local legal services clinic and get some free or cheap legal advice.

not to be harsh or anything but it sounds like you're screwed. obviously need to start liquidating non essentials, and try consolidating what you can. see if you can swing any forgiveness deals. good luck on this.
