If you live in San Diego or any neighboring cities, consider taking the car to a body shop near the border. They usually fix the car up for about 50% the cost of any official auto body shop. In addition, since you are getting it done with people other than "official" mechanics, it won't go onto your insurance record; therefore, you won't have any record of it happening. The same happened to me: I was turning a curve and hit the side of my car to a pole and scraped a good 2 feet and dented it. I took it to be appraised and they told me $2000 and 5 business days. However, I took it to a Mexican body shop and they quoted $600. (I am in no way stereotyping, but it really helps) So I saved money and a record in the insurance.

Hope that helps.
Cheers

There is no good repair aside from a body shop for this one. Like dodgeman said in his answer, the door pillar might also be bent, and that would be structural unibody damage that requires professional straightening. If you have a very sharp eye for this, you can try to compare the appearance of both sides of the car to see if, not figuring in the dent itself, the doors on the damaged side appear to be seated ever so slightly crooked when compared to the other side. If that is not the case then you are lucky as to the extent of the damage. If the 1foot x 1foot indentation is towards the back of the rear door, closer to the rear wheel than to the pillar with the front door then the door pillar is very much less likely to have been bent. For a perfect dent repair it might be best to replace the door, just pushing out the sheet metal will likely never result in a smooth surface appearance anyway. It often doesn't look better than the original dent, in my opinion much more ugly. How much repair it will be in the end depends on your friend as well and whether her car is new or more like an old junker; she would be entitled to a professional repair job of course.

I'm one who has worked around cars for years. You will get what you pay for. You didn't say what type of car which makes a big difference. If it needs a repaint and you want it fixed cheap then you are going to end up with body work that will look cheap in a few months and you end up with a car losing about $1500.00 or more in value. Now days everyone wants something for nothing. You made the mistake and you have to learn to do things right. Maybe you should go to the wrecking yard and buy a new door. Probably find the same color, then you will understand what it really takes to fix a car the right way.

You are wise to look away from the auto body thieves!
They are used to taping into the fat insurance industry, and could not care less about what to bill individuals. I suppose that if they charged us consumers less, they would be admitting to overcharging insurance companies!
With damage you describe, any first time do-it-yourself er can
handle it! The hardest part would be to match the paint, if it
needs to be repainted. There are repair specialists out there
who use special "unconventional" tools to pop out dents of
this kind without major labor or any parts replacements. I wish I could refer you directly to one. Just make some calls and ask around.

i own a shop, and probably what has happened it may have warped the door post that helps support the door, and these are really hard to straiten out,id say he,s real close on price on this one because i have done this type of a repair before, and it can take a lot of time to get one of these right again, you can check around and see what other shops want to do this job though, you might find a better price on it,but its a lot of work that's for sure, good luck i hope this helps.
