steve's bathtub, when full, will drain in 12 minutes. The hot water tap takes 6 minutes to fill the tub, and the cold water tap takes 4 minutes to fill the tub. If steve opens both taps but forgets to put in the plug, in how many minutes will the tub be filled?

3 minutes.

If you assume the tub has 12 "units" in it, the rate of draining is 1 unit per minute (12 units/12 minutes). The hot tap fills 2 units per minute (12 units/6 minutes) and the cold tap fills 3 units per minute (12 units/4 minutes). Hot and cold minus drain equals
2+3-1=4 units/minute. Since the tub is 12 units, it'll take 3 minutes at this rate.

Good luck.

drains at 1/12 tubs per min
water comes in at 1/6 + 1/4 = 5/12 tubs per min

net fill rate is 4/12 or 1/3 tubs per min
1/3 tubs per min will fill the tub in 3 minutes
