the operating system language.

Both do the same things in another operating language. There are fans and haters in both worlds. Why is one more popular than the other...no real good answer, except marketing. I understand that Mac is loved by the college crowd and the PC is the industry and military standard issue. The real test to which one is better is try them out and see which one is better for you and your computer needs and or requirements.

OK well once upon a time there were big differences but today things aren't so cut and dried so I will offer my opinion here.

The BIGGEST difference between MAC and PC is that for all practical purposes the PC is a "Generic" device. The people who make PCs (Dell, HP, etc) don't make Windows. You can buy X version of Windows and choose to run it on Y brand PC. Thus you have more freedom. You can easily run Linux on your PC.

Oddly enough, when Apple originally introduced the Mac they had some Orwellian ad that suggested the PC (IBM at that time) was "big brother" while the MAC was not. Yet the MAC is a "closed" system whereas the PC is not.

It's kind of like this: the PC is a generic DVD player manufactured by many companies that can play any standard DVD whereas the MAC is a proprietary DVD type player that is ONLY made by Apple and can ONLY play special DVDs.

The truth is that Apple *could* make the MAC OS run on a PC but they don't. Why is that? Windows can run on a MAC.

The best thing about a PC is that you are not STUCK with one and only one manufacturer and thus you have more choices, more software, more add-ons, more support, more books, more magazines, etc, etc, etc. If you choose MAC you pay a premium price for less consumer choice.

That's my opinion and I'm sure a lot of "Mac-Heads" will strongly disagree.

I've been using both platforms for years, and aside from a few minor details of the type of processors used, there has been no real difference other than the Operating Systems. The dual core Macs and the dual core Centrino machines are practically the same. The new Windows Vista O/S is almost the same as the Mac O/S. Already there are programs that work equally well on both platforms. Soon, the whole world will be dominated by Mac's and P/C's emulating Mac's.

They are overall fairly similar. If you ask a room full of mechanics, how many will prefer Ford to Dodge? The one major difference is not in the systems themselves, but the selection of software available. If you're into gaming, PCs have a *much* greater selection of software (not that there aren't awesome games for Macs).

Parts aren't always easy to find for Macs in some areas and they tend to cost a little more. Aftermarket parts for most PCs are plentiful and often cheap but vary wildly in quality.

I have a PC cause i'm an artist, but musicians might need a Mac. I prefer PCs because Apple was the only computer company that did not decide to try to find a way to use less energy on computers within the next ten years.
