I think your partly right about understanding, also hopefully we've lived long enough to learn something ,and to be smart enough to learn from our mistakes, and that makes us better and also more compasionate.

How old is older? I'm 54 and at my stage I'm physically more active now than in my 20's . . . even though I rest more often and move a bit slower! Now I go to the gym and work out; but I have more trouble descending from my roof and consume more ibuprofen than my 30's.
Mentally . . . well let's just say my learning curb shows a definite rise . . . but I don't like lectures as well. I always preferred reading.
Socially - my relationships are more open, deeper, numerous, and more likely to be personal than business than they were in my 40's.
I'm just as crazy about my wife as the day we married I know her so much better now - but even after 20 years, 2 children, and 1 mortgage every thing she does, says, or wants rocks my world.
I would say as we get older a larger frame of reference helps us to comprehend quicker thus the increases understanding that allows us to prioritise the things in our lives so we can afford to not track every bit of data we input --- Digital sampling drops a lot of an analog signal but deliver the best sound and video on playback!
Of course you could ask me again in 30 years when Alzheimer's sets in if I'm not yet old as you think!

Better at what? Mentation or physical activity? Older women make better lovers, an old song once suggested. Experience tends to bear that out. Now, whether a man gets wiser as he grows older is debatable - but you didn't hear that from this guy!

It varies some lose themselves along the way. Unless you make a conscious effort to know yourself better. I dunno I am in my prime really, and I will say the same forty years from now if I am still kicking.
