Need to have blood drawn to test for prolactin levels--hormone responsible for milk production. Both the anterior and posterior pituitary gland responsible for milk production. Check hormones first. Discharge could be sign of breast cancer, but probably not likely due to age unless family history of breast cancer and the fact that you said "breasts". Either way, call drs office and ask to speak with dr or nurse and say "discharge from breast", you'll get a quick appt.

It is possible to produce breast milk when not pregnant for several different reasons.

The hormone responsible for milk production is called prolactin. It is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain.

Medication such as metoclopramide or thioridazine can cause a rise in prolactin.

Pregnancy is the other main cause, but milk production is not usually until later in pregnancy and you say that you have had regular periods - therefore this explanation is unlikely. It is not impossible though.

A rare cause of high prolactin levels is a benign growth in the pituitary gland that over-stimulates the prolactin releasing tissue. It is for this reason that I would ask you to see your GP.

Blood tests can be used to measure the level of hormones in your body and an eye test can show whether or not there is any significant enlargement of the pituitary gland.

If the gland is enlarged, it affects how much you can see at any one time ('visual fields') and this can be picked up by an optometrist.

Treatment usually requires referral to a specialist, who can also exclude any problems in the breast itself.

In older women, a condition called 'duct ectasia' can cause a milky discharge from the nipple, but this is unlikely due to your age.

Hopefully you will now be able to see your own doctor prepared with a bit more information about what the underlying problem could be.

Take a pregnancy test first. I leaked a lot when I was pregnant - long before the books said it should have started. If it is negative, then go see a Dr. I have heard of a type of breast cancer that causes breasts to leak.

You can't be leaking milk unless you've already had a child; but ifyour nipples are leaking fluid, you should see a doc about it. In the meantime, I wouldn't entirely rule out pregnancy. Birth control is not 100% effective, after all, and many women menstruate MONTHS into their pregnncies. They don't always lose their periods right away.

Just because you're not on any new meds, doesn't mean that it can't be medication. I was on Risperdal for over a year before I started lactating because of it. If you're on a progesterone-only birth control pill or Depo-Provera, that could be causing it too.

Really, any number of things can cause it. Sometimes, our bodies are just strange like that.
