I'm glad you asked that question and I will give you an answer given to me that may scare the crap out of you. First let me say that I served my time during Viet Nam and No, I don't want suffering or death for anyone, especially the innocent. I felt the invasion was wrong from the simple standpoint it would create a power vacuum. Duh.. Who couldn't see that coming.
Now for your Question. Last year I was in Nigeria one of the other workers was an Algerian National. This was his response to resolution of the Iraq issue.
America needs to get out of Iraq now.
I countered but that would leave chaos. He said yes it would. But it's their problem. It existed before you intervened and tribal issues will have to be resolved. But it's their problem and only they can find a solution. No matter how good your intentions it must be theirs not yours.
I said, people will die. He said yes they will and they are dying now.
I said but America will lose face if we pull out. He said yes, but what do you want, resolution or face. In the end, when the issue is resolved in a manner only the Iraqi's can resolve, the world will see America took the hardest but only affective approach.
That was tough for me to take but I can see the horrible wisdom of it. He was Muslim and a very good one.
He also could see the reason for cooperation among religions. He seemed to have genuine knowledge of the Koran and said the term. "There is but one God" was meant to recognize the common denominator of Judaism, Christianity and Islam so they would unify and do works that would praise God.

If we leave?? I suppose you are referring to the Americans.
These middle eastern countries have always been war torn,
so nothing much in the form of devastation is going to occur whether it be Iran, Iraq, Lebanon or Timbuktu.
It's only now that we have access to world wide news that some people want to save the planet.
Decades ago, the average person didn't have an inkling, or care for that matter, what happened outside of their own specific country.
Sort your own little wars out the best way possible, as it's always been. "You start em, you fix em"
and, humanitarianism has got nothing to do with wasting money on war, guns, ammo, and the big bazooka.
Better to stick ya money in ya swiss bank.

I support the concept of the nation building attempt in Iraq and that it is better to fight terrorists there then at home. I am not at all in favor of a war with Iran. That doesn't mean I support a government run by religious fanatics having nuclear weapons. It also doesn't mean I support the way we are handling Iraq. Leaving prior to stability is just plain stupid. However, taking sides in a civil war by supporting the majority Shiite religion over the Sunni religion and undermining our allies in the region is also not the smartest of ideas. Pulling our forces into the peaceful areas of Iraq and letting them fight it out but using what influence we have to stop the worst excesses seems to be a better idea, at least to me. Recognizing that Iran is a legitimate regional power who also wants stability in Iraq is a big part of this.

No need for war in Iran, but we do have to stay on a little longer in Iraq to make sure they have a self sufficient government. wouldn't make much sense to walk away now and let everything go straight to hell after all the time, effort, and sacrifice we have made there.

Maybe you should've posted this question in the 'Military' subject since this a very good question to ask those there. I personally don't like war and I am not for another war and personally, I think I will pass on this question.

I defer to Caretaker.
Yes, it's amazing the agility with which so many seem to bounce around their stances on what we should be doing there and why we are there. Usually, when stripped of the masks, it comes down to xenophobia.

Whoever says that we need to stay in Iraq a bit longer to help them is a idiot!!!!!!!! We already ruined that country. No one is actually helping them now. Bush just wants to secure that place before he leaves office, well the next president will probably work for oil too. PS- Iraq was okay before and now it is a disaster and that is SAD that IRAQ will be ANOTHER ARAB COUNTRY INFLUINCED BY THE EVILS OF THE WESTERN WORLD! Oh, I hope you guys dont really think that there are terrorist in Iraq. That is conspired by government.
