When we hear the death of some one near and dear, we tend to shed tear, and become sad. This is emotion. Laughter effected due to some incident is also emotion.

When we answer a QUIZ we tend to work up through our INSTINCT, and memory power. So also, many day to day incidents (such as a telephone ringing) make us behave instinctively.

Emotions are states of human mind, that suppress reasoning of the mind and drives the person into some action (like anger, crying, violence etc.)

Instincts are basic quality or nature of humans, which need a way for expression/satisfaction. Freud's theory states that sex and aggression are basic instincts of humans, which is disputed by some. One could also add the need to be loved and love, need to be accepted by the society as equals etc. Most of us become emotional when it comes to matters that are related to the gratification of our instincts.
