This dictionary definition is how I personally think:
Of or relating to the United States of America or its people, language, or culture.
Other regions/countries/cities of places outside the USA, but still in the Americas, i.e., North/South/Central America all have names specifically denoting where they are or the individual cultures of those areas.
While referring to a natural born resident of Lima, Peru, as an American is technically correct; it is not very descriptive of the true nationality, culture or location of that person. Why would anyone want to use a term that has been defined for over 225 years as meaning having to do with the United States as something else? We are what we are, and are where we are, as well.
Mexicans have told me they are Americans. But their nation is the United States of Mexico, not the Mexican States of America. That was their choice, and being Mexican is distinctive from the USA.
I truly do not understand all the fuss.

An American is a member of the great family of the American Nation.
You get to be one by being accepted by those who already are.
A piece of paper issued by some drone of a bureaucrat sleepwalking through his life may make you a legal resident or even a "US citizen", but it does NOT make you an American.
