Learn all the chords you can, and learn the barre chord variations, which are used in a lot of rock.

Learn a major scale, and minor scale, and use that as a basis for exercising individual note picking and fretting.

Play w/ more experienced people! Showing each other up helps you learn more, and inspires you to become better...

Learn tablature in order to play your favorite popular songs.

You can do it!

I also play guitar, and find I get into a rut like you mentioned. But when I find a song I really like, and want to learn how to play, I get inspired, then I start progressing once again, as I am learning the song. So my suggestion to you, is think of songs you like, and learn how to play those songs.
I discovered a site where you can get guitar lessons to learn how to play guitar for just about any song you can think of. The lessons include interactive guitar tab you can follow on a fretboard display, and also, learn the guitar strum patterns for the song, all this, while you are listening to the CD synched audio.
The site is called, and has free previews for all the songs, at Guitar Lessons Online ( http://download-sheet-music-online.com/guitar-lessons.html ).
