I found a bone once in a field. Kept it for a few days before giving it to my dog. I figured while it could have been from a human corpse, it probably was from a deer or some other animal with large bones.

If you think there could be a "reasonable" chance the bones could be human, call the police, but NOT their 911 number. Call the non-emergency number and tell the dispatcher (who will think you are nuts) that you found some human looking bones. She may send out an officer.

Truth is, very few people actually are familiar with real human bones. Civilization always bury the dead in specific places, meaning graveyards. But their shape is very distinct and hard to confuse with any other bones, except for the skeletal remains of the young.

If I found some, I will phone the non emergency section of 911. If it was during a walk, I would have already taken pictures with a digital camera so that can be sent to the police through the net.
They might say Yes it is or no it isnt, and I wont disturb the area any further.
