I plan to build a small pond about maybe 3 feet long and 2 feet wide. It willl be about 2-3 feet deep. I also plan to put my red-eared sliders in it, water plants, and maybe a few gold fish. Thanks for your help

Pond liner may seem expensive, but it really is reasonable. Although, there are many things that could be used in place of liner, you must be careful. Many things that are not made to be pond liner could be treated with something that is harmful to your fish and turtles. People tend to want to use roof rubber, it will kill your fish. Please do some research first if you are using something other than pond liner.

If you use anything other than a pond liner it will not last long and will degrade, get holes in it easy and leak. Im not sure you want those problems. You can use pond liner or roofing rubber - they are both the exact same thing except the roofing liner is cheaper (half to 2/3 the price) and may be treated. The treatment washes off though so if you buy this make sure to wash it well with soap and water. This liner is rated to hold up for at least 20 years and is durable. Also line the pond with rock - this will help with prolonging the life of the liner. Careful of sharp rocks or objects - you don't want holes in the liner. The liner is tough but you dont want to take chances.

With a pond as small as yours you will need filtration or airation, espically with turtles and goldfish. They both are 'dirty' animals and create alot of toxic waste. You can add plants to help with the waste but your pond is way too small to not have airation and filtration. Generally the smaller the pond the harder it is to keep up. IE: problems are magnified when they happen because of the small space. Beware that many turtles eat goldfish too.

Also be forwarned that turtles will wander for food if there is no food source or if it is mating season. This is why you see turtles on the move in spring time. Thus they may wander away if not confined.

Check ebay for pond liner for sale or search google for pond liner and get the best price.

At koi competions, they use those cheap plastic kiddie pools. This is much more difficult to keep clean. Remember, you have to rinse this out, countless times and scrub it with a clean brush. You then have a koi pond, which likely needs to be cleaned every two days. My friend used an old pool liner, but she cleans the liner several times a year. Turtles, fish, seem to be ok in muck, but the blue-green algee is bad..

I used my daughters swimming pool to make a home for her turtle. Left it on top of the ground, but I think I would bury it and landscape around it if I were to do it again. RScott

I used a commercial skylight. It cost $20. You can even use an old bath tub. just dig the hole to suit and pop it in.
