I like them both, but if i had to pick one of the two i would say Gene Wilder.

I get the impression that Johnny Depp was only chosen for the part because he was the "hot actor" at the time. The way he played Willy Wonka as a weirdo with no childhood & daddy issues who seemed like a child molestor (remind you of michael jackson?) just seemed a bit off.

I like Gene Wilder in the '70s version. In fact, I like the entire first movie better than the remake. Johnny Depp's portrayal of Wonka was just . . . weird. And the entire movie kind of had a dark edge that wasn't originally intended. I think Tim Burton was a mistake for the director.

Gene Wilder. I like Johnny Depp a lot, but I read that book to my son many times and neither actor was really close to how the character seemed in the book. But Depp's Willy Wonka was scary, thanks to Tim Burton and Wilder's was more human.

I lean towards Gene Wilder's rendition. Seems very human yet zany, passionate but demented. He also sang, something Johnny Depp didn't do as much in the remake. Don't get me wrong, Depp was terrific in his interpretation of the character, but there seemed something just a bit more approachable in the 1974 Wonka. Either way, now I'm craving chocolate.

I love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but the 70s one is way better. Let's face it- the Wonka character is creepy. I'd never leave my theoretical kids alone with him. Johnny seems to be trying too hard to be creepy, while Gene Wilder just is creepy.

That scene where they go through the tunnel- *shivers*.

i enjoy the first one 10 times better becuase of many reasons 1: the candy didnt look like glass
2: willy wonka didnt look like a creepy wierdo that i would stay away with a 100ft pole
3: and the story after charlie won was extreamly stupid

I like the Gene Wilder version. My 9 year old daughter even loves the older version the best and she saw the newer one first.
