let two numbers be x and y

then

x+y=12 , ie x=12-y
xy=17 therefore 12-y(y)= 17
17-12=y*y
y=root 5

Not really sure what the question is, but 17 is prime.
Only 1 x 17 = 17.

let 1 of the numbers be x, and the other y.
then as given x*y=17 thus x=17/y
the difference can be eithr x-y or y-x
thus x-y=12 or y-x=12
then 17/y-y=12 or y-17/y=12
and solve them.by quadratic formula
